The article “How web pages work”, talks about how easy is to create a website. They write indicates that there are four basic things to know when creating a website:
1. Web page, which is a simple text file that contains not only text, but also a set of HTML tags that describe how the text should be formatted.
2. HTML which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language
3. Webbrowser, which is how a web page is viewed, sample of web browser: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer.
4. Web Server which is where webpages are requested from. This network machine host pages.
Any Web page you create will contain the following tags at the start of the page:
: tells the Web browser that this is the beginning of an HTML document
: tells that Web browser that this is the header for the page (you'll learn later what goes between "HEAD" tags)
This information is typed using a program named Notepad on windows or on a Macintosh, this program is called SimpleText
The article goes on to show what I consider a review of what we have learned in class about using HTML codes to create a web page.
I read the other articles, but the one that most caught my attention was the “How to make a website of your Own”
She really broke it down, and even compare the options of either paying or DIY. Paying to have a website built for you can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. DIY will cost you lots of time.
• Computers and software have enabled individuals to become one-person operations with an internet connection and a laptop. The same is true with website design. Anyone with a computer can create a website. Is this always a good thing? Explain your thoughts.
I don’t think that building a website yourself is a good thought. To build a very good website, the person must be dedicated, understand the principles of creating a successful website, otherwise the website will never attract visitors and it will sit online with very little interest from internet users.
• What are some of the advantages to creating your own website rather than hiring a professional? What are some of the drawbacks?
The advantages are that you can really have access to the page(s) and can pretty much update the pages whenever you want right away. If you are able to build your own website and follow the guidelines, ideas and suggestions to do it right, it can be something that can give you an opportunity to learn and create even more websites in the future.
When you hire a professional, not only will it cost hundreds of dollars, there’s always the continuous monthly expense to maintain the website, something you won’t need if you build it yourself. The only benefit of having a profession is that your website will be up and running sooner and you’ll have a professional available to help with any technical problems.
• What is the difference between Usability and Accessibility with regards to web design and why are both important?
When I use the term “usability” on this site, I mean design for usability – designing to make stuff easier to use. While accessibility refers to if the webpage is built in such a way that will allow people with disability to have easy access to the web page. Both are very important to help bring people to the webpage and keep them coming back.
